Memory Impairment

memory impairmentMemory impairment can be a natural part of the aging process or can be the result of brain disease or trauma, certain drugs, and even vitamin deficiencies.

Exactly how much memory impairment is natural is hard to say. One doctor put it well by saying, “Forgetting where you put your keys is normal, forgetting what the keys are for is a problem.” If you fear someone you know is suffering more memory loss then should be expected for their age, or is suffering memory loss early in life, you should get him an appointment for neuropsychological testing.  Unfortunately memory problems can be permanent or degenerative. The sooner they are recognized and treated, the better the outcomes are. A test for memory impairment is typically simple and non-invasive and will give you a better idea as to the heart of the problem.

Although some memory impairment is a natural part of aging, there are many things we can do to stay sharp. Keeping mentally active is a great way to keep your memory functioning well. Things like playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, playing music and reading all help preserve our memories. Fish oil also helps sustain cognitive function. Your memory is like anything else, you don’t use it you lose it.
